Description

This project is an implementation case of an automated storage system for the line-side warehouse of a thin-film sputtering target R&D and manufacturing company in southern Taiwan. The equipment specifications are a large-scale 6-meter Vertical Lift Module (VLM) with a single-load capacity of 1,000 kg. It is mainly used for the centralized storage, transfer, and digitalized management of large and heavy materials such as plates and bars.

Previously, the customer mainly stored materials on pallets. Due to the large size and heavy weight of the materials, they could not be stacked upward effectively and were also unsuitable for manual handling. This led to insufficient floor space, disorganized on-site workflow, time-consuming material retrieval, lack of transparency in material management, and a higher risk of collisions during handling. Based on the customer’s line-side warehouse requirements, Apex Equipment Co., Ltd. planned and implemented a large 6-meter Vertical Lift Module (VLM), combined with a labor-saving mechanism and an extension mechanism, to help improve the storage and transfer limitations associated with heavy materials.

After implementation, materials can be stored in an enclosed automated storage system and centrally stored vertically by means of high-load trays. Material picking is completed through a Goods-to-Person workflow. This not only improves space utilization, material retrieval efficiency, and material safety, but also makes line-side warehouse management more digitalized, organized, and efficient.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Case Overview

The client mainly stores plates and bars. Their large dimensions and heavy weight make manual handling impractical. Conventional factories typically store such materials on pallets and move them with pallet jacks or forklifts. Since pallets cannot be efficiently stacked upward, they occupy substantial floor space. Pallet-based storage also makes material management disorganized and locating specific items labor-intensive and time-consuming. By implementing a large 6m 1000kg vertical automated storage system with a labor-saving mechanism and extension mechanism, the client can centrally manage heavy materials in a sealed, automated, and digitalized environment while completing storage, retrieval, and transfer safely and efficiently.

1. Company Background: Thin Film Sputtering Targets and High-Value Functional Materials

The company in this case is located in southern Taiwan and is a global leader in the R&D and manufacturing of thin film sputtering target materials. Its core expertise is precious and rare metal recycling and refining, with a focus on the development and production of high-value functional materials.

The client’s products are primarily used in data storage media, optoelectronic displays, and electronic semiconductor industries. Because these products and materials are high-value, heavy, and subject to strict quality requirements, the storage method directly affects warehouse efficiency, handling safety, and material quality.

During discussions, the client expressed strong recognition of JY STE’s customization capabilities. The client had approached several vendors, some of which offered verbal commitments or preliminary design proposals, but none ultimately resolved the heavy-material storage and transfer challenges. The client therefore expected JY STE to provide an automated storage integration solution that was practical, implementable, and effective.

2. Project Background: Pallet Storage Created Space and Handling Bottlenecks

Most materials in the client’s factory were originally stored on pallets. However, pallets occupied substantial floor space, and heavy materials could not be stacked efficiently, resulting in poor space utilization. The core objective of this project was to optimize the storage method through an automated storage system and improve overall line-side storage management efficiency.

The materials requiring storage were extremely large and heavy. Handling consumed substantial manpower and time and could easily cause quality issues through collisions. Since the stored materials mainly consisted of plates and bars, conventional manual handling could no longer support operational requirements.

After gaining an in-depth understanding of the operating conditions, JY STE quickly assessed the client’s needs and proposed an integrated solution combining a large 6m 1000kg vertical automated storage system, a labor-saving mechanism, and an extension mechanism. This gave the client confidence to entrust the project to JY STE.
