Description

This project is the second vertical smart storage system implementation case for the parts warehouse of a machinery manufacturer in Northern Taiwan. The equipment specification is an extra-large 6-meter system with a single-load capacity of 1000 kg. It is mainly used for the centralized storage, inbound/outbound management, and inventory control of parts, materials, and heavy-duty items.

After completing the installation of the first vertical smart storage system at the end of last year, the customer introduced a second system this year due to the proven operational benefits and the responsive service support provided by the original manufacturer. Based on the on-site height condition of 7 meters and the customer’s material management requirements, JY STE Technology planned the implementation of an extra-large vertical smart storage system to help improve issues such as time-consuming material searches on multi-level racks, difficulty in manual inventory record management, and insufficient storage flexibility for heavy-duty materials.

After implementation, the parts warehouse can be managed through the WMS system, the goods-to-person operation mode, and 1000 kg high-load trays. This makes material outbound operations faster, inventory information more accurate, and heavy-duty parts storage more flexible, helping the customer continuously expand the benefits of smart warehouse management.

1. Project Background: A Second System Following the Success of the First

After the first vertical automated storage system was installed late last year, the client experienced its benefits in material retrieval, storage management, and inventory control. When planning a second system this year, the client again selected an extra-large 6-meter vertical automated storage system.

The key reason for the repeat purchase was that APEX is the original equipment manufacturer. Whether handling unexpected situations, reviewing requirement changes, or discussing adjustments after operation, APEX can respond promptly and provide practical solutions.

The second vertical automated storage system is now online and continues to support material storage and management in the spare parts warehouse.

2. Client Requirements and Project Conditions

01

Material Management

Support material storage, inbound and outbound operations, and inventory control in the spare parts warehouse.

02

7 m Site Space

An extra-large 6-meter vertical automated storage system was planned for the available 7-meter site height.

03

1,000 kg Load Requirement

Provide centralized storage for heavy parts and large materials while improving storage flexibility.

BEFORE / AFTER

Key Differences Before and After Implementation

The operation was upgraded from repeated climbing on multi-layer shelving, manual inventory tracking, and lower-level restrictions for heavy items to WMS-controlled retrieval, goods-to-person operation, and 1,000 kg heavy-duty storage.

Before | Multi-Layer Shelving

Before implementation, the factory used multi-layer shelving. Although this utilized vertical space, personnel had to repeatedly climb up and down to locate and retrieve upper-level materials, resulting in wasted work hours and higher management costs.

  • Materials were stored on multi-layer shelving
  • Vertical space was used, but upper-level materials were difficult to access
  • Personnel repeatedly climbed up and down to search for materials
  • Material searching and retrieval caused wasted work hours
  • Manual inbound and outbound records easily caused inventory discrepancies
  • Inventory discrepancies created management and cost issues
  • Heavier items could only be stored on the lowest shelf levels
  • Storage flexibility for heavy materials was insufficient

After | Second Extra-Large 6 m, 1,000 kg Smart Storage System

After introducing the second vertical smart storage system, workers only need to issue a simple outbound instruction through the standard WMS system. The required materials are delivered accurately to the operating position, significantly reducing the time spent searching for items.

  • The WMS system enables workers to issue outbound instructions
  • Required goods are delivered accurately to the operating position
  • The goods-to-person concept is implemented
  • Material search time and labor costs are significantly reduced
  • The WMS system manages inbound and outbound inventory data
  • Inventory information is controlled accurately, reducing discrepancies
  • Sufficient pallet capacity supports heavy-material storage
  • Automated handling allows heavy items to be stored at upper levels

3. Challenges Before Introducing Automated Storage

01

Time-Consuming Material Retrieval

Although multi-layer shelving utilized vertical space, personnel had to repeatedly climb up and down to locate and retrieve upper-level materials, resulting in wasted work hours.

02

Manual Inventory Tracking Caused Discrepancies

Traditional manual tracking of inventory inflows and outflows easily led to discrepancies between records and actual materials, creating management and cost issues.

03

Insufficient Flexibility for Heavy Materials

Heavier items could only be placed on the lowest levels of traditional shelving, reducing storage flexibility and limiting efficient space planning.

4. Solution: Second Extra-Large 6 m, 1,000 kg Vertical Smart Storage System

Based on the client’s material management needs and 7-meter site space, a second extra-large 6-meter, 1,000 kg vertical smart storage system was introduced. Through the WMS, workers only need to issue an outbound instruction, and the required materials are delivered accurately to the operating position. The 1,000 kg pallet capacity and automated handling also allow heavy parts to be stored at upper levels.

WMS Outbound Instructions

Workers only need to issue an outbound instruction through the WMS, and the required materials are delivered to the designated operating position.

Goods-to-Person Operation

Materials are automatically delivered to the access point, reducing manual searching, climbing, and handling time.

Accurate Inventory Data Management

The WMS manages all inbound and outbound inventory data, enabling precise control over material information.

1,000 kg Heavy-Duty Pallet Capacity

With sufficient pallet capacity and automated material handling, heavy materials are no longer restricted to lower-level storage.

5. Improvements and Benefits After Implementation

Reduce Material Search Time and Labor Costs

Workers no longer need to repeatedly climb multi-layer shelving to search for materials; retrieval is completed by issuing an outbound instruction.

Implement Goods-to-Person Operation

Required goods are delivered accurately to the operating position, reducing manual search, handling, and verification time.

Improve Inventory Accuracy

The WMS manages inbound and outbound inventory data, enabling precise material control and reducing discrepancies.
