Description

This project features the implementation of an automated storage system for the tool management warehouse of KING LAI HYGIENIC MATERIALS CO., LTD. The system is a large 5-meter model with a single-load capacity of 500 kg, designed for centralized tool storage, access control, and inbound/outbound management.

Before the upgrade, the customer managed tools with conventional storage racks, which required significant manpower for placement, searching, and daily control. Since the warehouse was operated as an open storage area, it was also difficult to control tool locations and maintain tool quality. The existing setup occupied valuable floor space and limited flexibility in production equipment layout.

Based on the site’s 5.5-meter height condition and the customer’s tool management requirements, JY STE Technology proposed a large vertical smart storage system to replace the traditional rack-based approach.

After implementation, tools can be centrally managed through enclosed storage, the WMS system, access control, and a goods-to-person operation model. The solution reduces manual searching and handling time while freeing up floor space in the factory. As a result, the customer can improve tool management efficiency, space utilization, and overall production effectiveness.

TOOL MANAGEMENT WAREHOUSE CASE STUDY

Kinglai Group|Tool Management Warehouse
Large 5 m, 500 kg Automated Storage System Case Study

This project involved the implementation of an automated storage system for Kinglai Group’s tool management warehouse. The client sought to improve tool control, optimize available space, and increase flexibility in production-area planning. Based on the site height of 5.5 m, Apex Equipment planned and implemented a large 5 m, 500 kg automated storage system. Through goods-to-person operation, WMS integration, enclosed access control, and effective use of vertical space, the solution reduced manual handling, minimized floor-space requirements, and released more factory space for production equipment.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Project Overview

Kinglai Group previously managed tools with conventional shelving, requiring substantial manpower for placement, searching, and inventory control. The open-storage environment made it difficult to manage tool location and condition effectively. In addition, the floor space occupied by tool storage limited production-equipment capacity and reduced layout flexibility. After implementing the large 5 m, 500 kg automated storage system, goods-to-person operation, WMS management, enclosed access control, and vertical storage significantly improved tool-management efficiency, space utilization, and production performance.

1. Company Background: A Leading Enterprise in Vacuum Components and Materials Engineering

Established in 1991, Kinglai Group specializes in vacuum components, accessories, and valves widely used in vacuum-related industries, including semiconductors, solar energy, and coatings. The company was listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange in 2011 and expanded its international presence through the acquisition of a U.S. company at the end of 2016.

Kinglai Group has more than 1,000 employees across Taiwan, China, the United States, India, and other regions, supported by multinational manufacturing and service capabilities. As a leading company in materials science and engineering technology, Kinglai has consistently focused on improving production efficiency, product quality, and on-site management.

During the site visit, the client stated that it wanted to use automated storage to address tool-management and site-optimization issues. Because Apex Equipment’s automated warehousing solution matched these objectives, the two parties began this smart-storage implementation project.

2. Project Objective: Tool Management and Site Optimization

During the visit, the client clearly identified tool management and site optimization as its primary requirements. Conventional tool storage depends heavily on manual placement, searching, and control. As tool quantities and specifications increase, management costs rise and storage space becomes increasingly constrained. Based on the available 5.5 m site height, Apex Equipment designed a large 5 m, 500 kg automated storage system, upgrading the warehouse from conventional shelving to a systematic, access-controlled, high-density smart-storage model.

01

Tool Management

Improve tool placement, retrieval, access control, and inbound/outbound management.

02

Site Optimization

Use previously underutilized vertical space to reduce the warehouse footprint.

03

Production Efficiency

Release factory floor space and improve flexibility for production-equipment placement.

BEFORE / AFTER

Key Differences Before and After Implementation

Upgraded from conventional open shelving to a large 5 m smart-storage system with WMS integration, enclosed access control, and goods-to-person operation.

Before|Conventional Tool Shelving

Before implementation, the client used conventional shelving for tool storage. Considerable manpower was required for placement, searching, and management, while the open warehouse made it difficult to control tool location and condition.

  • Tools were stored on conventional shelving
  • Significant manpower was required for tool placement and management
  • Open storage increased management difficulty
  • Tool condition and location were difficult to control
  • Storage space reduced available capacity for production equipment
  • The warehouse footprint affected production efficiency

After|Large 5 m Smart Tool Warehouse

After implementing the large 5 m, 500 kg automated storage system, tool management was optimized through goods-to-person operation, WMS integration, enclosed access control, and vertical storage, reducing manual searching and floor-space usage.

  • Goods-to-person operation reduced manual searching and handling
  • WMS integration improved tool and inventory management
  • Enclosed storage improved tool-access security
  • Only authorized operators can activate the system or perform transactions
  • Previously unused vertical space was fully utilized
  • The warehouse footprint was significantly reduced
  • Factory space was released to improve production efficiency

3. Management Challenges Before Implementation

01

Conventional Shelving Required Extensive Manual Labor

Conventional shelving required substantial manpower for tool placement, organization, searching, and management.

02

Open Storage Was Difficult to Control

The open warehouse increased management difficulty, making tool location, access status, and material condition difficult to control effectively.

03

Storage Footprint Limited Production Layout

The floor space reserved for tool storage reduced the space available for production equipment and affected overall production efficiency.

4. Solution: Large 5 m, 500 kg Automated Storage System

Based on Kinglai Group’s tool-management requirements and the available 5.5 m site height, Apex Equipment designed a large 5 m, 500 kg automated storage system. The vertical-storage design transformed the conventional floor-based tool warehouse into a high-density smart-storage facility. WMS integration, goods-to-person operation, and enclosed access control reduced manual searching, tool misuse, and floor-space consumption.

Goods-to-Person Operation

The system automatically delivers tools to the operator, reducing searching, handling, and management effort while improving retrieval efficiency.

WMS Warehouse Management System

The WMS manages tool information, inbound and outbound records, and inventory status, reducing discrepancies caused by manual management.

Enclosed Access Control

Only authorized personnel can activate the equipment or perform transactions, reducing the risk of misuse, loss, and unauthorized access.

Efficient Use of Vertical Space

The system uses previously underutilized vertical space to reduce the storage footprint and improve factory-layout flexibility.

5. Improvements After Implementation

Reduced Manual Management and Searching

Goods-to-person operation made tool retrieval more direct and reduced manual searching, organization, and handling.

Improved Tool-Access Security

Enclosed storage with access control made tool transactions more manageable and reduced the risk of misuse and unauthorized operation.

Reduced Floor-Space Requirements

Using previously unused vertical space significantly reduced the warehouse footprint and improved site utilization.

Greater Flexibility for Production Equipment

With a smaller storage footprint, more factory space became available for production equipment, improving overall production efficiency.

Systematic Tool Information Management

With WMS integration, tool information, access records, and inventory status can be managed systematically.
