Description

This project is a Phase II automated storage system implementation case for the parts warehouse of a building materials company in Taichung. The equipment specifications are a large 4-meter automated storage system with a load capacity of 500 kg per tray. It is mainly used for the centralized storage, inbound and outbound management, and inventory record control of parts and materials.

After implementing the Phase I Vertical Lift Module (VLM) at the end of 2023, the customer clearly improved previous issues related to insufficient site space and difficulties in inventory record management. Therefore, in early 2024, the customer once again discussed the Phase II implementation plan with Apex Equipment Co., Ltd. Because the customer already had practical experience using the equipment, they had a clearer understanding of the convenience of automated storage and their specification requirements. For this phase, the load capacity per tray was further upgraded from 300 kg to 500 kg to meet the storage requirements of heavier parts.

After implementation, parts can be managed through automatic height detection, storage location allocation, a Warehouse Management System (WMS), and a Goods-to-Person workflow. This not only improves space utilization, inventory record accuracy, and outbound efficiency, but also effectively addresses storage location limitations for heavy materials. As a result, the parts warehouse of the Taichung building materials company continues to advance from its Phase I foundation toward a higher-load-capacity and more intelligent warehouse management model.

SECOND PHASE PARTS STORAGE CASE STUDY

Building Materials Company in Taichung – Phase II – Spare Parts Warehouse
Large: 4m 500kg

After the client introduced our warehouse solution at the end of 2023, it clearly solved their previous problems of insufficient space and material management. They contacted us again at the beginning of 2024 for the introduction of a second Vertical Warehouse. Since the customer already had our physical equipment in use, they had a clear understanding of the convenience brought by the solution and the corresponding specifications, so the two parties quickly reached a consensus. Finally, the client decided to upgrade the equipment specifications from a single pallet load of 300kg to 500kg.

1. Project Background: Phase II Vertical Warehouse

After the client introduced our warehouse solution at the end of 2023, it clearly solved their previous problems of insufficient space and material management. They contacted us again at the beginning of 2024 for the introduction of a second Vertical Warehouse.

Since the customer already had our physical equipment in use, they had a clear understanding of the convenience brought by the solution and the corresponding specifications, so the two parties quickly reached a consensus during the communication.

Finally, the client decided to upgrade the equipment specifications from a single pallet load of 300kg to 500kg.

BEFORE / AFTER

Status Before / After Implementation

A comparison of the traditional fixed material rack and manual inbound and outbound control with automatic height measurement, storage allocation, WMS management, and Goods-to-Person operation.

Before | Traditional Fixed Material Rack

After | Large – 4m 500kg Spare Parts Warehouse

The traditional fixed material rack was used in the factory. The fixed storage height could not be adjusted flexibly according to the size of the material, resulting in ineffective use of vertical space and wasted storage space. The traditional method relied on manual control of inbound and outbound operations, making inventory discrepancies more likely. The time required for personnel to search for materials could not be accurately controlled.

After introducing our storage solution, the equipment’s automatic height measurement and storage allocation functions can adjust shelf spacing according to the height of the material, reducing wasted storage space on each level and greatly increasing storage capacity. Equipped with a standard WMS system, the storage system can properly manage inbound and outbound data and accurately track material-related information. Workers only need to make a simple outbound request, and the corresponding goods can be accurately delivered to the operating position, realizing Apex Equipment’s “Goods-to-Person” concept.

  • The fixed storage height could not be adjusted flexibly according to the size of the material
  • Vertical space could not be used effectively, resulting in wasted storage space
  • Manual control of inbound and outbound operations made inventory discrepancies more likely
  • Inventory discrepancies caused management and cost problems
  • The time required for personnel to search for materials could not be accurately controlled, invisibly increasing company costs
  • Heavier parts could only be placed at the lowest level of the traditional shelf
  • This resulted in insufficient flexibility in storage utilization
  • Automatic height measurement can adjust shelf spacing according to the height of the material
  • Storage allocation reduces wasted storage space on each level and greatly increases storage capacity
  • The appropriate storage height can be determined according to the height of the plant, making full use of vertical space
  • The standard WMS system properly manages inbound and outbound data
  • The WMS system accurately tracks material-related information
  • Workers only need to make a simple outbound request, and the corresponding goods are accurately delivered to the operating position
  • This realizes Apex Equipment’s “Goods-to-Person” concept
  • The pallet load capacity is sufficient, and material transfer is handled by the equipment

3. Status Before Implementation

01

Fixed Storage Height

The fixed storage height could not be adjusted flexibly according to the size of the material, resulting in ineffective use of vertical space and wasted storage space.

02

Manual Inventory Control

The traditional method relied on manual control of inbound and outbound operations, making inventory discrepancies more likely and causing management and cost problems.

03

Uncontrolled Material Search Time

The time required for personnel to search for materials could not be accurately controlled, which invisibly increased the company’s costs.

04

Limited Flexibility for Heavier Parts

Heavier parts could only be placed at the lowest level of the traditional shelf, resulting in insufficient flexibility in storage utilization.

4. Solution: Large – 4m 500kg Vertical Warehouse

The Phase II Spare Parts Warehouse uses a Large – 4m 500kg Vertical Warehouse. The client upgraded the single pallet load from 300kg to 500kg. After implementation, automatic height measurement and storage allocation adjust shelf spacing according to material height, while the standard WMS system manages inbound and outbound data. Workers make a simple outbound request and the corresponding goods are delivered to the operating position, realizing Apex Equipment’s “Goods-to-Person” concept.
