Description

This project features the implementation of a smart storage solution for the raw material warehouse of an R&D-oriented company in Northern Taiwan. The overall solution includes a custom large 4-meter 500kg vertical automated storage system, a smart storage cabinet, and an AMR autonomous mobile robot. It is mainly used for the storage, authorized access, temporary storage management, and automated handling of low-volume, high-mix controlled materials.

Before the upgrade, the customer stored materials on conventional racks. This often resulted in difficult material retrieval, a cluttered working environment, time-consuming material searches, insufficient control under an open-storage setup, repeated manual work when updating inventory records, and the inability to integrate access authorization with the material management system.

Based on the customer’s requirements for material security, confidentiality, and access control, JY STE Technology planned an enclosed smart storage solution. The system integrates ID card login, system authorization, position guidance, weight measurement, and digitalized records, helping the customer establish a more rigorous material management workflow.

After implementation, controlled materials can be centrally stored through the vertical automated storage system, while the smart storage cabinet and AMR support temporary storage and automated handling applications. All material access activities can be authorized and tracked through the system, improving inventory accuracy, picking efficiency, space utilization, and material security. As a result, raw material warehouse management in the R&D environment becomes more precise, secure, and automation-oriented.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Project Overview

The client maintains strict requirements for material security and confidentiality. Before automation, raw materials were stored mainly on conventional shelving, resulting in difficult access, excessive floor-space usage, time-consuming searches, limited access control, underutilized vertical space and cumbersome two-step recordkeeping. More critically, the client required access restrictions and user authorization that conventional shelving could not provide through a connected system. JY STE therefore integrated a custom vertical automated storage system, controlled smart storage cabinets and AMRs, enabling ID-based login, system authorization, location guidance, real-time inventory updates and complete digital records.

1. Company Background: Controlled Material Management for a High-Security R&D Environment

The client is a professional research institution in Taiwan focused on advanced technology research and development, with extensive experience in communications technology, electronic systems and aviation. Due to the sensitive nature of its R&D activities, the raw material warehouse required more than improved storage efficiency; it also demanded strict material security, confidentiality and user access control.

The warehouse handles controlled materials in small quantities and a wide range of specifications. Although conventional open shelving provided basic storage, it could not support system-based authorization, usage-record tracking or real-time inventory updates, creating persistent challenges in material control, stocktaking, retrieval and security management.

To meet these combined security and efficiency requirements, JY STE integrated a custom vertical automated storage system, smart storage cabinets and AMRs, upgrading the warehouse from conventional shelving to an enclosed, authorized, digital and traceable smart material management environment.

BEFORE / AFTER

Key Differences Before and After Implementation

The operation was upgraded from conventional shelving, manual registration and limited authorization control to enclosed automated storage, ID-card login, system authorization, controlled temporary storage and AMR transport integration.

Before | Conventional Shelving and Manual Inventory Records

Before implementation, raw materials were accessed from conventional shelving and iron racks. This arrangement required substantial floor space, created a cluttered working environment and made materials difficult to locate. Receiving, issuing and preparation were time-consuming, while the open shelving could not provide connected authorization control for materials subject to security and confidentiality requirements.

  • Materials were difficult to access on conventional shelving
  • Conventional iron racks occupied substantial floor space and created a disorganized environment
  • Materials were difficult to locate, making receiving, issuing and preparation time-consuming
  • Controlled materials were difficult to manage in an open storage area
  • Available vertical space was not effectively utilized
  • Personnel first recorded transactions at the shelf and then manually entered inventory changes into a computer
  • Access control was required, but conventional shelving could not support system-based user authorization

After | Custom Smart Raw Material Warehouse

After implementation, controlled materials are stored in enclosed automated storage systems and smart cabinets. Users log in with an ID card and receive system authorization before access is granted. Real-time inventory updates, location guidance, material indicators and digital records make picking more intuitive and accurate while improving statistical analysis and traceability.

  • Controlled materials are stored in enclosed automated systems for easier management and improved protection
  • Storage is no longer limited by manual picking height and can extend upward toward the ceiling
  • Location guidance makes material picking more intuitive and accurate
  • Material information is updated in real time through the storage management system
  • Authorization controls improve inventory accountability and stock visibility
  • Material indicators identify the exact picking location for more precise retrieval
  • Digital material records simplify statistical management
  • Users log in with an ID card and receive system authorization before accessing controlled materials
  • Smart storage cabinets and AMRs improve temporary storage and material transport efficiency

2. Management Challenges Before Smart Storage Implementation

01

Difficult Access from Conventional Shelving

Materials stored on conventional shelves and iron racks occupied substantial floor space and were inefficient to access and locate.

02

Limited Control in Open Storage Areas

Open storage could not fully support material protection, authorized access or traceable usage records for controlled items.

03

Cumbersome Manual Inventory Recording

Personnel had to register transactions at the shelf and then enter inventory changes into a computer, delaying updates and increasing administrative workload.

04

Insufficient Access and Authorization Control

The site required access restrictions, but conventional shelving could not provide connected system authorization or ensure that controlled materials were securely managed.

3. Solution: Custom Automated Storage, Smart Cabinets and AMR Integration

For low-volume, high-mix raw materials subject to strict security control, JY STE developed two primary smart storage solutions. The first is a custom 4 m, 500 kg vertical automated storage system for centralized storage of special-format materials and improved space utilization. The second is a controlled on-demand temporary storage system, implemented as a smart storage cabinet for secure staging and authorized access. AMRs were also integrated to support automated material transport, creating a more complete workflow covering storage, authorization, temporary holding and movement.
