Description

This project is mainly applied to line-side storage and retrieval management for semi-finished optical lens products. To support a wider range of product specifications, diverse semi-finished product types, and the need for higher production line efficiency, JY STE Technology planned a large line-side smart automated storage system for the customer.

The system combines position indication, access records, first-in-first-out management, height detection light curtains, and dedicated compartment configuration to help reduce manual identification errors on the production floor while improving space utilization and operational efficiency.

After implementation, the line-side warehouse was upgraded from conventional manual rack management to a systematic, traceable, and visualized smart storage model. This further supports the leading optical lens manufacturer in advancing toward smart manufacturing and automated production management.

Key Differences Before and After Implementation

The storage method was upgraded from traditional open shelving and manual identification to a controlled automated system with location indication, QR Code confirmation and real-time inventory records.

Before Implementation | Traditional Line-Side Storage

Semi-finished products were stored on traditional open shelves, and identification and access relied heavily on manual judgment.

  • Low space utilization
  • Semi-finished products looked similar but had different specifications, increasing the risk of identification errors
  • Actual inventory quantities were difficult to verify
  • Inventory records frequently did not match physical stock
  • Access records could not be tracked in real time
  • Incorrect access could reduce production yield

After Implementation | Smart Line-Side Automated Storage

After introducing the vertical line-side storage system, semi-finished product management became controlled, traceable and system-based.

  • The original storage footprint was reduced by approximately 50%
  • Location indication and QR Code confirmation reduce access errors
  • Real-time warehouse data reduces inventory discrepancies
  • Warehouse material data is updated in real time
  • The vertical system provides a clean, technological and professional appearance
  • Accounting discrepancies and access errors are significantly reduced

1. Industry Background and Storage Challenges

In optical lens manufacturing, many semi-finished products have similar appearances but different specifications. Traditional open shelving could not provide sufficient space efficiency, access control, inventory accuracy or error prevention for a Class 10,000 production environment.

01

Traditional Shelving Used Too Much Floor Space

Traditional shelving occupied a large floor area and resulted in low plant space utilization.

02

Similar Appearance Increased Identification Errors

Semi-finished products looked similar but represented different types and specifications, making manual access errors more likely.

03

Inventory Quantity Was Difficult to Verify

Without system-based records, actual stock quantities could not be accurately tracked and accounting records often differed from physical inventory.

04

Open Storage Lacked Material Control

The open shelving environment could not restrict or trace material access, increasing management and quality risks.

2. Solution: Vertical Smart Line-Side Automated Storage

The project introduced a 3 m vertical automated storage system with a load capacity of 300 kg per storage location. It is designed for controlled line-side management of optical lens semi-finished products in a Class 10,000 production environment.

01

Location Indication

The automated storage system indicates the correct location, reducing reliance on manual judgment and lowering the risk of picking and returning errors.

02

Real-Time Inventory Records

The system records every storage and retrieval transaction, tracks semi-finished products in real time and improves management transparency.

03

Closed Storage and Authority Management

Closed storage and user authority management keep materials controlled and prevent unauthorized access.

04

QR Code Confirmation

QR Code confirmation verifies the correct material before access, helping prevent picking and return errors.

3. Improvements After Implementation

50% Footprint Reduction

The original storage area was reduced by approximately one-half through vertical space utilization.

Controlled Material Access

Closed storage and authority management ensure that materials remain fully controlled.

Improved Inventory Accuracy

Real-time warehouse data reduces discrepancies between system records and physical inventory.

Reduced Access Errors

Location indication and QR Code confirmation significantly reduce incorrect picking and returning operations.

SMART MANUFACTURING

4. Long-Term Value for Smart Manufacturing

By replacing traditional shelving with vertical automated storage, the optical lens manufacturer established a controlled and traceable line-side warehouse. The solution improves space utilization, inventory accuracy and access reliability while supporting future smart manufacturing development.

Space Efficiency

Vertical storage reduces the required floor area and improves line-side access efficiency.

Quality Control

Location indication and QR Code confirmation help prevent access errors that could affect yield.

Smart Manufacturing

Real-time data and access records support digitalized and intelligent production management.
