Description

This project features the implementation of a humidity-controlled automated storage system for a petrochemical manufacturer in Southern Taiwan. The system is a large 6-meter model with a single-load capacity of 500 kg, designed for the centralized storage of low-volume, high-mix materials, as well as humidity control, access management, and inbound/outbound operations.

Before the upgrade, materials were stored on conventional steel racks and scattered across different areas of the facility. This setup not only occupied a large amount of floor space, but also resulted in time-consuming material searches, limited control over open storage areas, cumbersome inventory updates, and inadequate material preservation in a high-humidity environment.

To address these challenges, JY STE Technology introduced an enclosed vertical smart storage system tailored to the customer’s operational needs. The solution is integrated with a 24-hour dehumidification system, fingerprint access control, infrared indicator lights, an LED display, and vibration-resistant safety features, helping the customer establish a more stable environment for material storage and management.

After implementation, materials can be centrally managed through a systematic storage approach, while internal warehouse humidity can be maintained below 60%. With access control, position indication, and real-time inventory updates, the system improves picking accuracy, inventory management efficiency, and material preservation quality, creating a safer, more accurate, and more efficient storage operation for the petrochemical manufacturing site.

HUMIDITY-CONTROLLED STORAGE CASE STUDY

Southern Petrochemical Manufacturer | Humidity-Controlled Material Storage
Extra-Large 6 m, 500 kg Vertical Automated Storage Case Study

This case study presents a humidity-controlled automated storage solution implemented for a petrochemical manufacturer in southern Taiwan. Materials had previously been stored across multiple areas without centralized control, while certain items could not be exposed to high-humidity conditions for extended periods. Based on the client’s requirements for centralized management of low-volume, high-mix materials, humidity control, access authorization, and seismic safety, Apex designed an extra-large 6 m, 500 kg enclosed vertical automated storage system. The solution integrates a 24-hour dehumidification system, fingerprint authentication, infrared picking indicators, an LED display, seismic isolation pads, and flexible upper anchoring to create a safer, more stable, and controllable storage environment.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Project Overview

The client is a petrochemical product manufacturer located in southern Taiwan. Materials were distributed across different storage areas without centralized management, and some items could not be stored in high-humidity environments. This affected material control, preservation, and inbound and outbound handling efficiency. Following joint planning and evaluation, Apex introduced one extra-large 6 m, 500 kg enclosed vertical automated storage system. The system incorporates 24-hour dehumidification, fingerprint authentication, infrared indicators, an LED display, seismic isolation pads, and flexible upper anchoring to improve material preservation, access control, and overall system stability.

1. Company Background: Material Preservation Requirements

The client is a petrochemical manufacturer in southern Taiwan specializing in high-quality petrochemical products. Because the site handles low-volume, high-mix materials with different storage requirements, the existing decentralized storage method could no longer meet operational needs for material control, preservation, and efficient inbound and outbound handling.

Some materials are unsuitable for high-humidity environments. Prolonged exposure to moisture can cause metal components to oxidize or corrode, increasing risks during subsequent use and quality management.

Accordingly, Apex implemented more than a vertical automated storage system. The project also included an enclosed cabinet, 24-hour humidity control, authorized login, seismic restraints, and picking assistance, upgrading the facility from basic storage to an intelligent system with environmental and security controls.

2. Client Requirements and Implementation Conditions

01

Low-Volume, High-Mix Material Management

Centralize low-volume, high-mix materials previously stored in separate areas to improve locating, inbound and outbound handling, and inventory visibility.

02

Enclosed Storage with 24-Hour Dehumidification

Use an enclosed automated storage design with a 24-hour dehumidification system to maintain humidity below 60%.

03

Fingerprint Access Control

Control storage access through fingerprint authentication to strengthen material security and information management.

04

Seismic Safety Measures

Address Taiwan’s seismic conditions with seismic isolation pads, flexible upper anchoring, and displacement detection to reduce the risk of equipment overturning or tray movement.

BEFORE / AFTER

Key Differences Before and After Implementation

The operation was upgraded from traditional racks, decentralized storage, high-humidity exposure, and manual inventory recording to enclosed automated storage with 24-hour dehumidification, fingerprint authentication, and seismic safety design.

Before Implementation | Traditional Racks and Decentralized Storage

Before implementation, materials were stored on traditional racks across multiple areas. These racks occupied substantial floor space, contributed to a disorganized work environment, and increased the time required for locating materials, preparing inbound and outbound transactions, and updating inventory records.

  • Materials were stored and retrieved from traditional racks
  • Materials were distributed across different areas without centralized management
  • Traditional racks occupied substantial floor space and created a cluttered environment
  • Materials were difficult to locate, making inbound and outbound preparation time-consuming
  • Open storage made material control difficult
  • Available vertical space was not effectively utilized
  • Transactions were recorded manually at the rack and then re-entered into a computer
  • High humidity made preservation difficult and increased the risk of oxidation and corrosion

After Implementation | Extra-Large 6 m Humidity-Controlled Automated Storage

After introducing the extra-large 6 m, 500 kg enclosed vertical automated storage system, materials could be centrally stored in a controlled enclosure. Two dehumidifiers operate alternately to regulate internal humidity, while fingerprint authentication, location indicators, infrared picking lights, and an LED display improve material control and picking efficiency.

  • Materials are centrally stored in an enclosed automated system for easier management and better protection
  • Improves factory 6S conditions and creates a cleaner, more organized workplace
  • Makes use of ceiling height without being limited by manual picking reach
  • Vertical storage maximizes space utilization
  • Material location indicators improve picking accuracy
  • Infrared indicators and the LED display support faster, more accurate picking
  • Material information is updated in real time through the storage management system
  • Fingerprint authentication and access control improve accountability for inventory and material access
  • Two dehumidifiers operate alternately to control humidity inside the enclosed system
  • Seismic isolation pads, flexible upper anchoring, and displacement detection improve system safety

3. Material Management Challenges Before Implementation

01

Decentralized Material Storage

Materials were stored in separate areas without centralized control, making it difficult to track material status and transaction records.

02

Traditional Racks Occupied Floor Space

Traditional racks required substantial floor space while leaving available vertical space underutilized.

03

Time-Consuming Search and Inventory Updates

Materials were difficult to locate, preparation took longer, and transactions had to be recorded manually before being entered into a computer.

04

High-Humidity Preservation Risks

Some materials could not be stored in high-humidity conditions because metal components were vulnerable to oxidation and corrosion.

4. Solution: Extra-Large 6 m Enclosed Automated Storage with 24-Hour Dehumidification

Based on the petrochemical manufacturer’s material management and preservation requirements, Apex installed one extra-large 6 m, 500 kg vertical automated storage system. The enclosed design includes two alternating dehumidifiers to maintain internal humidity below the client’s 60% requirement. Fingerprint authentication controls personnel access, while infrared picking indicators, an LED display, and material location guidance enable faster and more accurate retrieval.

5. Seismic Safety Design for Taiwan’s Earthquake-Prone Environment

During project planning, the client emphasized the need for seismic protection because Taiwan is located in an earthquake-prone region. Apex incorporated seismic isolation pads and flexible upper anchoring to reduce overturning risk during vibration. A displacement detection system was also installed inside the unit to identify tray movement caused by external force, further improving operational and storage safety.
