Description

This project features the implementation of a vertical smart storage system for the spare parts warehouse of GREAT TUNG CHING TRADING CO., LTD. The system is a large 3-meter model with a single-load capacity of 300 kg, designed to manage spare parts for CNC lathes and high-precision machining equipment, including centralized storage, item search, inbound/outbound operations, and material flow tracking.

GREAT TUNG CHING TRADING CO., LTD. has long represented Japanese CNC lathes and precision machining equipment in Taiwan. Because spare parts are typically handled in small quantities with a wide variety of item types, the customer needed a more reliable way to manage storage locations, inventory records, and material movement. Before the upgrade, spare parts were stored on conventional racks, which often led to occupied floor space, a cluttered work area, slow material searches, limited control over open storage areas, and duplicate work caused by handwritten records followed by manual computer updates.

To address these challenges, JY STE Technology planned a large 3-meter vertical smart storage system and added an external management platform. This allows the second-floor office to check real-time spare parts information without relying solely on on-site personnel.

With the new system in place, spare parts can now be managed digitally through enclosed storage, position indication, access control, Excel data import, and the external management platform. The solution improves storage and retrieval efficiency, inventory accuracy, and material flow visibility, while enabling both office and on-site teams to work with synchronized information. As a result, spare parts warehouse management becomes more accurate, secure, and efficient.

This case study presents the automated spare parts storage solution implemented for GREAT TUNG CHING TRADING CO., LTD. 1. Company Background: Distributor of CNC Lathes and High-Precision Machining Equipment

Founded in 1983, GREAT TUNG CHING TRADING CO., LTD. has built its business around service and a consistent commitment to its founding principles. This approach earned the recognition of TSUGAMI CORPORATION in Japan, leading the company to become Tsugami’s general agent in Taiwan. Since then, it has remained committed to introducing advanced CNC lathes and high-tech, high-precision CNC machining equipment to Taiwan’s manufacturing sector.

In 2014, the company was appointed as the Taiwan agent for Nakamura-Tome Precision Industry Co., Ltd. Its portfolio includes CNC solutions based on different machining principles, including configurations in which the cutting tool moves while the workpiece remains stationary and those in which the workpiece moves relative to the tool. Because the appropriate configuration depends on the characteristics of the material and machining process, the company must maintain a wide range of spare parts to support equipment service, maintenance, and customer requirements.

As the range of spare parts expanded, conventional steel-rack storage increasingly caused problems with part retrieval, inbound and outbound handling, inventory records, and space utilization. The company therefore evaluated Apex Equipment’s vertical automated storage solution to establish a more efficient spare parts management process.

2. Project Background: Low-Volume, High-Mix Parts with Second-Floor Inventory Visibility

As a distributor of CNC lathes and high-precision machining equipment, GREAT TUNG CHING TRADING CO., LTD. must keep a substantial inventory of spare parts. These items were originally stored on conventional open racks, but as the number of SKUs increased, the company encountered growing difficulties with part retrieval, inbound and outbound records, inventory control, and workplace organization.

During the initial planning stage, integration with the company’s host system was also considered. However, because direct integration would require coordination with the ERP provider and could involve additional supplier costs, the client chose a more independent approach. Administrative staff prepare and organize the required data, which is then imported into the storage system through Excel.

The client also required staff in the second-floor office to create picking orders and monitor spare parts movements. In addition to the large 3 m vertical automated storage system, an external management interface was therefore installed so office personnel could manage warehouse operations and access real-time inventory information.

The core challenge in this spare parts warehouse was managing low-volume, high-mix inventory with frequent inbound and outbound movements while also giving office personnel visibility into material flow. Continued reliance on conventional racks would have resulted in prolonged search times, repetitive inventory entry, wasted space, and limited control over open storage.
